Teotihuacan — The Pyramid Day Trip from Mexico City

50km northeast of Mexico City, Teotihuacan was once home to 125,000 people — the third-largest city on earth when Rome was at its peak. The Pyramid of the Sun stands 65 meters tall. The Avenue of the Dead stretches for 2km. No one knows exactly who built it or why they disappeared.

Getting there: Metro to Terminal Norte (Line 5), then the Teotihuacan bus (MXN 40 each way, every 15 minutes). Arrive when the gates open at 8am — by 11am it is crowded and the midday heat is brutal.

Time needed: 3-4 hours to walk the full site and climb both major pyramids. Hire a guide at the entrance (MXN 400) — context transforms the experience.

Skip the tours: Every tour company in Roma and Condesa sells Teotihuacan day trips for $40-80 USD. The direct bus costs MXN 80 roundtrip and takes the same time. Save the money for lunch.

Chichen Itza — The Yucatan's Crown Site

El Castillo — the stepped pyramid at Chichen Itza — is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and it deserves the title. The site covers 10 square kilometers and includes the Great Ball Court, the Temple of Warriors, and the Sacred Cenote. The pyramid aligns precisely with the sun on equinox (March 20-21, September 22-23), creating a shadow serpent that descends the staircase.

Logistics: 2.5 hours from Playa del Carmen by ADO bus. Arrive by 9:30am — tour buses from Cancun arrive 10-11am and the site becomes packed. Allow 2.5 hours at the site. Cenote Ik Kil (3km away) is the standard post-ruins swim, MXN 180 entry.

Entry: MXN 571 (includes state zone fee). No advance booking required. Hire a guide at the entrance — they make every panel and inscription legible.

Tulum Ruins — Caribbean Cliffs and Mayan Walls

Tulum is the only major Mayan site built on a cliff above the Caribbean Sea. The ruins are smaller than Chichen Itza, but the setting is extraordinary — turquoise water visible behind every ancient wall. A post-ruins swim at the beach below is mandatory.

Getting there: ADO bus from Playa del Carmen (1 hour, MXN 120). From the Tulum bus station, colectivos run to the ruins. Arrive at 8am. Entry MXN 80.

Coba — The Climbable Pyramid

Coba's Nohoch Mul pyramid is one of the last major Mayan structures still allowed to be climbed (Chichen Itza banned climbing in 2006, Tulum never allowed it). At 42 meters, the views over the Yucatan jungle are unmatched. Coba is also far less crowded than Chichen Itza.

Getting there: Colectivo from Tulum bus station (45 minutes, MXN 60). Bicycle rentals available inside the site (MXN 60) — the ruins are spread across 70 square kilometers of jungle, making cycling essential.

Monte Alban — The Zapotec Capital

Monte Alban was built on a flattened mountaintop 8km from Oaxaca City around 500 BC. The Zapotecs leveled the top of a mountain, built a ceremonial center, and made it the capital of their civilization for over 1,000 years. The panoramic views of the Oaxacan valleys are extraordinary.

Getting there: Colectivos from Mercado de Abastos (MXN 25 each way). Allow 2-3 hours at the site. Hire a guide at the entrance (MXN 400) — the site is largely unlabeled.
